Steps to begin one…

1. Who are Franciscan Youth (YouFra) in the USA?

2. Why would an SFO want to be involved with them?

     · Read the SFO Rule, Article 24.

     · Read the SFO Constitutions, Article 96 and 97.

3. How would an SFO begin to be involved with them?

     · Read and study the NATIONAL STATUTES OF THE FRANCISCAN YOUTH/YOUNG ADULTS OF THE U.S.A.

     · Read the MISSION STATEMENT of the Youth/Young Adult Commission of the Secular Franciscan Order of the United States of America.

     · Read and study the two Formation Documents:

FRANCISCAN YOUTH (YOUFRA) A WAY OF FRANCISCAN VOCATION

           FORMATION PROGRAM FOR FRANCISCAN YOUTH

     · Read "The First Three Things Every FY/YA Interested Person Should Do"

4. Read and understand the USCCB’sCHARTER FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

5. Comply with the FYYA Statutes, Article 52.

6. Suggested steps for an emerging Youth or Young Adult Fraternity to follow:

    a) Youth will begin meeting regularly, at least monthly.

    b) Local SFO Fraternity appoints a professed SFO from sponsoring fraternity council to be contact and attend the YOUFRA

meetings; this is usually the Youth Fraternal Animator and/or Youth Formation Director.

c) Select a member from Youth Fraternity to attend SFO fraternity.

d) Inform Regional SFO Executive Council who informs the National FYYA Council.

e) Begin formation of 3 phases:

     i. Initiation (3-6 months)

ii. Formation for the Promise (minimum 1 year)

     iii. Deepening One’s Vocation

f) When 5 members of Youth Fraternity are Promised, they elect their own council, according to the FYYA Statutes.

g) They can choose a name at any time. Right away with the beginning members sometimes works the best because then the group feels it has an "identity".

h) It takes 5 to make a YouFra fraternity, Promised or in formation.
